Separating menu color from WPS color?
« on: August 21, 2006, 06:59:42 AM »
Is that possible?

The menu should be: backround color black with foreground color white in order to save power.

The WPS should be aiming at iCatcher: invers to the menu, so a white backround with a black text.

Thanks in advance,

themaiday

You cannot at this time have different foregrounds in different places.

Also, white text with a black background will not save power. I'm not sure what made you think it will.

Sure about that? The white color ist much brighter -> more power usage?

If you are right, there is no more problem..

Imagine a flashlight shining at a piece of paper. If you poke holes in the paper, more light gets through, but the flashlight is still shining just as bright. This is *basically* what the LCD is doing.

The menu should be: backround color black with foreground color white in order to save power.
This is only correct for CRT- and OLED-Displays. With a TFT-Display it is the other way round:
Dark colours consume more battery power because the display has to hide the backlight.

Whoa. How about a reference? Now I'm really curious...

We tested this in a course at school a few years ago. If you plug an ampère meter between the monitor and the socket-outlet you can read the power consumption.
A normal TFT uses about 40W. As far as I can remember the difference between black and white was about 6W.
I have got no reference because i neither could find my courseware nor could I find something with a quick search on google.

I haven't done a benchmark yet, but my "Lights" WPS (White text/Black background) does seem to eat more power than my "White Lights" WPS (Black Text/White Background). by a noticable amount.

If anything, compare a white backdrop image with a colored one with a black one. Don't compare a background color with a backdrop image, since they're handled slightly differently.

Sorry, I should really have said "Black text, lots of white with some black and some color on the WPS screen" as opposed to "White text, lots of black with some white and some color on the WPS screen".

I don't really care how much battery is saved on a totally stark black/white (or white/black) wps, as I like a little eye candy and am willing to give a bit of battery life to it.

(Aside: I still want the ability to totally blank the screen after X time or when the hold switch is on)
