a simple quick question...how do i enter my iPod in disk mode

Hold Menu+Select until the screen clears, and then hold Select+Play until you enter disk mode.

I wonder why everybody need to enter the disk mode, I'm from mexico, and have software 1.2, and since the moment i plug my ipod, immediatly shows up on my explorer as a usb device, no need to do anything, and it`s not just mine, my friends' act all the same.

this relates to the ipod, but i don't know if i should start a new thread, what exactly does the "Sad iPod" screen mean.
