Does iPod Pitch Control work?
« on: August 20, 2006, 02:46:05 PM »
I am shopping for a new mp3 player.  I want to get an iPod and install RockBox on it.  But I have 3 questions about the pitch control feature.

Question #1
I am wondering if pitch control works on the iPod.

This discussion suggests no:
http://forums.rockbox.org/index.php?topic=3223.msg22998#msg22998

But this discussion is almost 6 mths old.

Questions #2
If pitch control works, the user manual says:

The pitch value can be adjusted between 50% and 200%.

Short Scroll Fwd/Scroll Back Increase / Decrease Pitch by 0.1%
Long Scroll Fwd/Scroll Back Increase / Decrease Pitch by 1%
Prev/Next Temporarily Increase / Decrease Pitch by 2.0%

I am assuming this means I can pitch my music from 50%, 50.1%, 50.2%, ..., 99.9%, 100%, 101.1%, ..., 199.8%, 199.9%, 200%.

Question #3
If pitch control works, does it work well (eg no skipping)?

Thanks in advance for your input.

it works, but its not true pitch control, it actually works by adjusting the playback speed.

That is what i would call "true pitch".
I'm guessing you are thinking about time stretch/compress to alter the tempo but not the pitch?
That is not supported in rockbox. (besides, it never sounds good when done in realtime anyway. (it barely sounds even ok when done with very expensive equipment for that matter))
The Pitch function works nice in my x5 (present button issues not regarded...)

Works just fine on the iPod Video here. That is if you set the pitch value from 50% to around 133%. More than 133% will cause skips because the MP3 decoder routine cannot keep up with the amount of data requested. I am sure that with other formats you can go for an even higher pitch (FLAC?).

Thank you for your replies.

You are correct.
I am interested in altering the tempo.
If the pitch changes, that is OK.

I will use the +-10% range.

I need relatively fine granularity, e.g. at most 1% increments.
If the user's guide is correct, I should be able to get 0.1% increments.

Actually, it was kind of hard to get to a specific value (e.g. 104.3%) because of the iPod scrollwheel. The scrollwheel always picked up a short scroll even if you wanted a long one - so instead of changing the pitch by say 2%, you change it by 2.1% because of that short scroll. I am sure that if you use it a lot you will get used to it :)

BTW this test was done with the latest nightly build and the extra 0.1% could just be a bug.

So, does this mean that to change the pitch you also change the tempo, and vice versa? This would be great, as I listen exclusively to spoken word podcasts and often want to increase the playback rate.

And it works on all devices which support RockBox (i.e. including iPod)? Certain models of iRivers and Cowon players can do this with a firmware upgrade, but this is the first time I've heard of it working on an iPod.

Yes, it works.  Every now and then I play around with it for kicks just to hear the singers change into girly men  ;)

Thank you Rockbox gods.  :)
