Playback skips alot
« on: August 19, 2006, 11:13:57 AM »
Hi everyone, Im new here!  ;D

I have sucssesfully installed rockbox on my ipod but the playback tends to skip alot. Surely there must be a way around it because Im sure that people here care for there audio and have come up with a solution. I really dont want to sacrifice EQ bacuse thats the only reason why I have installed rockbox. Can any one please help me!

I've got caught word of the hardware EQ, hopefully this will resolve any issues.

Also note that there is work in progress to enable the second core on the PortalPlayer CPU.  This should eliminate skipping issues entirely.

Assuming we use it for playback. It's possible that using the second core will be significantly worse for battery life, in which case it's unlikely it'll be used for normal playback use.

Though it's also possible that we can run it at a lower average speed, and then decrease the voltage, and actually gain some battery life out of it. So, umm, we'll see.

Some thoughts-
One - try turning off all EQ settings, and try using a very simple plain theme (i.e. no peakmeters, no scrolling text) and see if that resolves the problem for you
Two - please understand that rockbox is in development and that work is ongoing to improve the performance of the audio codecs and the hardware drivers to reduce exactly the kinds of problems you mentioned.

This is very true - just give it a bit of time.  I've got an iriver and it never skips, no matter what bitrate, pretty much without the CPU boosting at all, even with eq, peakmeters etc.  One day (sooner if more people help), the ipod shall get there too!
