Trying to wrap my brain around bookmarking....
« on: August 16, 2006, 05:57:26 AM »
I'm hoping that someone out there will be able to help me figure out why bookmarks work sometimes and not other times.
I generally listen to 2 or 3 large files which are all in one folder.
The bookmarking will work well until, I believe, I add another song file
to the folder. I have my Bookmarking option set to "yes" for bookmark
on stop - but when I press stop there's no bookmarking done, and if I hold
down the stop button to shut down, all I get is "Shutting Down" and no
"Creating Bookmark" before the shutdown.
Then when I go to the Quick Menu and try to "Create Bookmark" manually,
nothing happens.

I'm hoping that it's just me being an idiot and not realizing something simple. I understand from the manuals that bookmark files are supposed to
be residing in the folder that the music files are. Does adding a new song to
the folder turn off your bookmarks? The only way I've been able to get the
bookmarking to work again is to delete my firmware and load the latest
build, which seems to be rather inconvenient.
My present build is 060808, and I've had troubles with bookmarks through
each build I've loaded since I began using Rockbox in July.

Thanks a lot for any clarification/help on the whole bookmarking system.

Delete all bookmarking files and install a whole new daily build. Then see what happens. If that build works, keep it and rename it so you know that version is a good one. In case you get another build down the road.

How did you add the new song?

If the current playlist is modified somehow (e.g., by manually inserting a track), bookmarking is disabled (Rockbox really should show a message at that point, informing about the problem). Saving the playlist in question might be enough.

Aaaah - I didn't realize that certain actions could disable bookmarking.
Thanks, Lear, for that information. I'm wondering how I would have
ever known that if you hadn't replied to my post?
I fooled around with my playlist, and re-saving it after inserting the track
seems to be the answer - it appears it has to do with the strange
netherworld of "dynamic playlists".
Thanks again!
