How to REALLY shut down the iPod?
« on: August 16, 2006, 04:45:09 AM »
When charging my iPod with rockbox, I obviously don't want it running as it likes to restart itself or something while I'm sleeping (I have no idea but I know there's a white flash often :P) and when I turned it on today it'd leaked some battery power after charging already. Is there a way to fully shut down the iPod, or run the Apple firmware if I hold down a key so I could get the normal charging screen? Any help appreciated :)

Hold down "play" to turn off Rockbox.  If the charger is plugged in, the iPod will restart.  When you see the apple, hold "menu" to boot into the original firmware.

I'm asking if there is an option to disable autostart while iPod is plugged in?

Just turn the hold switch on.  Then, if it restarts, it will restart to the Apple firmware and charge normally without any further restarting.

to the original question:
it seems the ipod really, REALLY likes being "on" when it's being charged.  that part is built into the original firmware -- AFAIK you cannot keep it from turning itself on during charging at all (though if i have some detail wrong here, someone feel free to correct me).

the problem is, rockbox doesn't know how to recognize that an ipod is plugged in for charging, like it does with other players (hence the lack of a "charging" icon, or a "backlight always on when charging" option).  Thus it will auto-poweroff after X minutes (X is an option you can choose in the menus), and when it does poweroff, the firmware will think it's been plugged in, and auto-restart, but it will then fire up rockbox.  get it?  kindof an unbreakable loop.

The workaround i've found (even though the one someone's already posted above may in fact work better) is to go into the rockbox menu and set "idle poweroff" to "always on".  the disadvantage, obviously, will be that it never powers-off, even when it's not charging; however, it'll at least stay on overnight while you're charging it, and not keep blinking at you thusly.  Hopefully someday they'll figure out how to make the ipods detect charging... but i'm not aware enough about the technicalities for why this hasn't happened yet.

As I told you in IRC, it's aware of the charger and charging, it simply doesn't have any code to do anything with that awareness active yet.

alot of new electronic products like to be "on" while your charging them for some reason.   it would be nice if  the rockbox members made it so the ipod wasnt   on when we changed it from a home charger. not saying i wish this...it would just be nice...(saying this so nobody tells me to  code it myself)

This is something that is done by the apple firmware (if you plug in the power the apple flash firmware will start), so nothing Rockbox can change -- if you turn of the Ipod Apple's flash firmware will power it up again ...
