Way to Increase Buffer Size?
« on: August 10, 2006, 10:33:20 PM »
I upgraded to a daily build today from one from a month to six weeks back.  I noticed that my buffer size when from 1.6mb to 1.4mb or so. Other than trying to do my own custom build of rockbox, is there anything I can do to try and reclaim some of the lost space?

I don't know which new overdrawn features lately sneaked into the poor little Archos build, too. </pun>  ;-)

But you can gain about 150 kB when running from flash (Rombox).

I always do.  (Well, except for that bit of time many months ago when RB was too big to build Rombox...)

It shrank some more!  On a CVS build from today (9/21), the buffer is now 1.3MB.  I'd imagine that this shrinking buffer is probably having an effect on battery life, but I have to check that.

Are you sure you haven't changed any settings? 100k shouldn't vanish that quickly at all.

Well, it was a month between builds (August - September), so it could've easily have happened in that time...

Not really. The build size itself should be less than 300k anyway, which means a 100k increase would be very very significant. Then there's the fact that you're running Rockbox from flash, right? Which means that what's using space are the various other buffers for fonts, plugins, etc, rather than an actual increase in size of Rockbox. It would be really strange for someone to have allocated 5% of the Archos' RAM for something in the last month.

Have you cleared your settings, and then shut down and started back up, to see if that affects the amount you have available?
