Battery charging
« on: August 10, 2006, 05:08:59 PM »
I have an Ipod 5g with rockbox, I have no plans to charge it via computer/USB connection but I do charge it to dock connector/ via directly to an ac adapter.

But everytime I hook it up to charge, rockbox boots up everytime and the battery icon graphic starts moving is there anything I missed? is it safe for this to happen? do I need to charge in apple firmaware by holding Menu? im new to rockbox so someone telling me the proper technique for charging a rockbox powered ipod would be very appreciated.

A) Have you searched the forums, as there are many threads discussing this.

B) The behaviour you're describing doesn't sound like the default. Are you using a modified build?

So, when you hook it up to charge, while not pressing any buttons, it boots into Rockbox, or it boots into the disk-mode screen, where it says "Do not disconnect"?

Exactly It boots up directly to the rockbox screen when I have it conneced directly a/c adapter to charge, the only time ive seen it in disk mode was when it was hooked up via USB directly to the computer.

Yes, I know you have it plugged into an AC Adapter but it should still enter disk mode if you aren't holding any buttons down. You are using the Rockbox bootloader, installed by the method we put forward in the Wiki, and not some other bootloader, and are definitely running an official daily build from our daily build page, right?

Is the battery meter moving up in succession like power is being added rapidly, then dropping back down and repeating?

Okay, I've been told that your dock probably charges via firewire.

So, the next question is: What exactly is your question?
You plug your iPod in, and Rockbox tells you it's charging...

Sorry I wasnt clear before but yes my dock connector is via firewire connected to the a/c adapter, my question was is it normal for it to boot up into rockbox everytime I connect the dock connector directly to the Ipod to charge? I was expecting some kind of charging screen like apple firmware has.

No, Rockbox boots and charges in Rockbox. You *may* find that your iPod doesn't seem to be charging as quickly as it used to. If this is true, boot into the Apple firmware before you start charging.

Okay thats good is just ive been using apple firmware for years and got used to the charge screen when directly hooked up to charge. I didnt see it in rockbox but instead rockbox firmware booted up and I saw a tiny battery graphic on the top left showimg me it was charging. Basiclly the main question was, is this the normal way rockbox charges? because I thought it was wierd how it booted up just to charge as opposed to apple firmware where it just give's me a charging screen.

Sorry for confusion im not very clear when trying to describe things but you guys are extremely helpfull and anwser questions fast. ;D

When I plug my Ipod into the USB connector cable, with the iPod off, first Rockbox boots. Then it goes directly into a screen with a blinking circle with a slash through it, with the words "Do not disconnect" under it.  Is this normal?

A couple of questions:

1. Is it possible to listen to music on the iPod as it charges?  Right now I can't! None of the buttons seems to work while the iPod is plugged in and so playback (or anything else) is impossible.  Am I missing something?

2. I hope this is not a stupid question, but when/how can I disconnect the iPod?  Am I supposed to be doing something to make the "Do not disconnect" language go away.  What I have been doing is just disregarding this language and disconnecting it when feel like it, but I assume this language is there for a reason, or is it?

1) I suggest reading the FAQ, as this is covered. You aren't actually charging in Rockbox, you're in the Apple disk mode.

2) This langauge only applies if you're connected to a computer, in which case you should tell your computer to eject the device first, though this is only actually important if you're copying files.

Regarding my first question (1):  I apologize. I DID spend time looking through the latest version of the manual first-- I did searches on "charge," "charging," "disk mode," and "battery" and still did not find the answer.  I did not think to check the FAQ, but I have now checked the GeneralFAQ, the BatteryFAQ, the LiLonBatteryFAQ and the Quickstart guide.  Of the top of your head do you remember which FAQ it is in?

===

EDITED TO ADD: OK, this is covered in a section I overlooked, and says:

      "How can I charge the iPod via USB and still be able to listen to Rockbox?

       Hold down the MENU button as you insert the USB cable."

====

My second question (2) is indeed clearly covered in the manual and I should have seen that. Sorry.

It's in the IpodFAQ. Very, very definitely. ;)
