Volume = output level to headphones for monitoring
Gain = recording level (this adjusts the pre-amp that sits before the ADC)

So you need to change the gain to adjust the signal that goes to file. Use the peakmeters (right above the volume line) to see what levels you're getting.

So the gain IS the only way to control the input level with Rockbox! I'll try that. Thanks!
