A1018 serial remote on iPod mini 2g doesn't work - $50 reward

Hello everyone!

I have an iPod mini 2g with the official Apple A1018 remote, using the headphone + remote port at the top. Audio works, remote control does not.
Not sure if this is allowed, but: I'm ready to pay a $50 reward via PayPal for fixing/adding support.

The serial port is well documented, running at 19200 baud. In the past there were multiple reports regarding this:

I also found a commit from 2016 regarding this, but it was never merged. https://gerrit.rockbox.org/r/c/rockbox/+/1342

This is possibly also a problem on iPod Classic 4g and 5g, as they use the same remote.
Fixing this should also fix the Griffin iTrip and iTrip LCD.
