I get the error no partition found (0) insert usb cable and fix it.
« on: July 03, 2025, 12:26:48 PM »
Hello. After installing rockbox on ipod 6 gen, I get the error no partition found (0) insert usb cable and fix it. 4.0, but after connecting the cable, the ipod switches to usb keypad mode: multimedia and does not display as a disk, which does not allow using the rockbox utility to reinstall. I saw a forum thread with a similar error, however, there was no solution.  Windows recognizes the iPod as a keyboard. Please help, I am grateful in advance.

You could reboot the iPod into either Apple Disk Mode or Rockbox Bootloader USB Mode and then open /.rockbox/config.cfg in a text editor to either change or delete the USB Keypad Mode setting, and then try rebooting again into Rockbox.  You might have to turn on Windows' Show Hidden Files setting in order to be able to see the /.rockbox directory.

Reboot the iPod by holding down SELECT and MENU. Then once it power cycles immediately hold down SELECT and SKIP FORWARD to boot into the Rockbox boot loader disk mode. If there is actually a valid Rockbox partition you will see it now when you connect the iPod to a computer.

Thanks for the tips, thanks to them, I managed to log into Rockbox Bootloader USB Mode, but I don't understand why the "no partition found" error occurs, because both file explorer and diskmgmt.msc show that everything works correctly and the ipod hardware worked flawlessly before installing rockbox. I have reinstalled rockbox several times through the rockbox utility, tried the basic and development versions, tried changing usb ports and even windows versions, nothing helps. I also found that in the file rockbox.info the memory line has a value of 64, while my ipod has 160 gigabytes. What additional information can I provide to make it easier for you to find a solution to the problem? Thank you for your time.

I'm not a developer, so can't say definitively, but I would strongly suspect that the "64" in rockbox info is referring to the onboard RAM, not the size of the storage device (i.e. the hard drive).   The 6g has 64MB of RAM.

The error itself I don't know.  Seems as if Rockbox itself is not seeing the drive, even though the OF and windows can.  Is it possible that despite windows reporting it to be FAT32 it actually isn't?  Something maybe screwy about the formatting of the drive?  Pretty sure I've had that happen with flash modded ipods in the past, though wouldn't expect it to arise with the original HD if the drive itself wasn't failing.  Have you tried looking at it with AOMEII (and maybe rewriting the MBR)?  Or checking it for errors from within windows?

Oh, also have you definitely installed the correct version of Rockbox (i.e. for the 6g)?

my ipod has 160 gigabytes

I assume that means the iPod has an HDD.  Is it the original or have you modded it?

What numbers are you seeing for Reallocs and Pending in the SMART data screen of Diagnostic Mode?  [Reboot and then immediately press and hold the Select and |<< buttons until you see the first diagnostic screen, then navigate to SMART data via Manual Test -> IO -> HardDrive->HDSMARTData.]

I suspect that if you go into fdisk (or whatever) the partition type identifier will not match its contents.

Also it's not clear from the description here if the error is being reported by the bootloader (which is pretty old at this point) or the much more recent rockbox firmware.

Before the error occurs, the rockbox logo appears. Based on this, I assume that the error is reported by firmware, not bootloader, but I may be mistaken.

The original HDD is installed. I did not make any modifications.

Judging by the fact that filesystem shows as empty in your Windows screenshot I suspect that you don't have music you care about losing on the iPod.

I would suggest that you restore the iPod via iTunes and if you install an old version you can select an ipsw firmware file from disk by holding down the Shift key when pressing restore.

Use firmware iPod_38.2.0.5.ipsw[Classic 4G (160 GB) (38/2.0.5)] or
iPod_35.2.0.4.ipsw [Classic 3G (160 GB) (35/2.0.4)] depending on your hardware revision.

Once your iPod has been restored (and the correct filesystem created) verify that the device shows up in Windows as a removable disk. If that works correctly then you can install the Rockbox bootloader. Reboot the player and check if the Rockbox bootloader error changes from "No partition found" to "Error! Can't load rockbox.ipod". If you get the latter message then all you need to do is unzip Rockbox to the player.
