Who the hell is "Solomon Peachy"?
« on: April 28, 2025, 03:16:16 AM »
I just donated to Rockbox via PayPal but it says my gift was donated to "Solomon Peachy".

Is that a nickname or a real name?

He's the current person in charge of our infrastructure hosting, and to be fair, most development. When around ten years ago rockbox was seriously slowing down with the old guard (myself included) dropping out, he was one of the volunteers stepping in, and I'd say without him the project would probably not be very alive today.

He's indeed a real person and likely has spent more cash of his own than we've received in donations in at least a few years

Not to mention the time spent :)

Oh, bigpilot
Thanks for the donation too.

How does one donate hardware?  There seems to be a need for an ipod6g.

Unfortunately, it's a very real name.

The short version -- There never has been a "Rockobox" legal entity, and given the near-complete lack of assets and cashflow it's not worth the paperwork (and ongoing expense) to create one.  So it goes to my personal paypal acccount.

On the donation front, since I took over administrative duties, on average donations have covered about half of operating expenses (mostly hosting fees), So far in 2025, we're slightly cashflow positive.  I maintain records of every transaction, in or out.

Generally, reach out directly to the interested party and work out shipping details.

FWIW, assuming it makes financial sense, sending known-working hardware is better than sending funds to buy hardware.  This is especially true for used (and/or modded) ipods.

Very good - thanks for the info.  Will do.

How are you running the website? On a VPS or real-hardware in someone's home / location?

I'll spare you the historical details, but for the last two years or so, most services are on on a mid-tier (8 vCore) VPS hosted by OVHCloud.  (DNS and email are hosted on a different server of mine, and the mailing lists are still hosted by the OG rockbox crew at haxx.se)

Additionally, five folks provide a total of 9 systems that perform the 390 (!) builds that happen after every commit.  (Three of those systems are mine)

I now have business-class gigabit fiber at home, but due to my being a major disaster magnet (three hurricanes and a forest fire in over the last 1.5 years, plus numerous minor outages) I've been reluctant to bring cricical stuff back under my roof.
