Allow iPod lock switch to function as a light switch
« on: April 16, 2025, 02:56:40 PM »
Suggesting to add setting that would allow the iPod (and other devices if have one) lock switch to function as a "light switch" for the display backlight.

I originally thought this was possible, but realized that although the lock switch does allow light to be turned "on" in the Settings, it still locks device which prevents any actions from being performed.

The idea of this setting would be that user can turn "off" the backlight and still be able to perform navigation/actions, but then if user needs backlight, the lock switch would act as a "light switch", turning the backlight "on" and still allow user to perform navigation/actions.

Thank You

As far as I'm aware, the iPod hardware prevents any other button input from being read while the lock switch is engaged, so I don't think this is possible.

If you set 'Backlight on Hold' to 'Off', the backlight would turn off when you engage the Hold switch and turn on when you disengage the Hold switch.  Of course, you wouldn't be able to manipulate the device while the Hold switch is engaged, but it is a way to manually turn the backlight off and on.  I use it for that purpose - the backlight is only on briefly while I need to take some action(s) and then I immediately turn it off again with the Hold switch when I'm finished (for the time being) performing actions.

@crhis_s
Thank you for reply.
Ohh I did not think about "lock switch" achieving the "locking" of controls on a hardware level, I thought this was happening on a software level that could be changed.
That is unfortunate, I thought this could be a helpful feature.

Thank you again for reply/sharing this information.
If anyone is aware if this is possible, please mention it.

@iPodVT
While I was typing this post I got a message that another user responded at the same time :)
Thank you for your reply as well.
Ahh I wish it was reverse, because my use case is slightly different.
But this answers the question I had, what does the "off" setting do :)
I had my backlight off at the time, so was not thinking about it as reverse :)
Different then what I am looking for unfortunately, but a good idea though.
Thank you for sharing this
