IPod 6G Shutdown Hang -- Problem when Backlight on Hold is set to Off
iPodVT:
To clarify the scenario where auto shutting down after Idle timeout did not produce a flash of white:
The backlight had already timed out and gone dark some while before the Idle timeout shutdown occured, so the backlight went from fully dark to medium dark for the shutdown message and then the iPod powered off - no white flash.
With one of the three problem Classics I just now set the backlight timer so that it would remain lit until Idle timeout occurred. That scenario produced the same result as when I manually shutdown/rebooted: backlight was already lit and then flashed white before displaying the Shutting Down msg. I tried the same test with one of the non problematic ipod6gs that had not flashed white when manually shutting down and it also did not flash white when the backlight was already/still lit at Idle Poweroff timeout. Then I set the problematic iPod's Show Shutdown Message to No; when Idle timeout occurred the backlight was still lit, flashed white, and then shutdown without displaying the Shutting Down message.
Seems to indicate that if the backlight is already lit at shutdown, it will flash white before shutting down - but just with those three problematic iPods. Crazy.

I think that's probably a clue to the issue but with a device to test its probably good enough to make sure its on

Hello, responding in this thread because I think this is the exact issue I have been dealing with (6g, hold switch shutdown) but on my third encounter I can't restart the ipod at all even after charging and MENU +Select. Is there any method to bring my ipod back to life?

As to your immediate problem:
How long are you holding the Select and Menu buttons? You probably need at least 8 seconds to get it to reboot, but if you hold it for much longer than that you might put it into DFU mode.
If your iPod is already in DFU mode you might have to do a restore with iTunes or Apple Music. Have you tried connecting to a computer running iTunes or Apple Music? I don't know how newer Macs and the Apple Music app respond to an iPod Classic in DFU mode, but iTunes should say something like "iTunes has detected an iPod in DFU mode" [or maybe "in Recovery mode"], and then give you the option to restore it.
Also, have you tried connecting to a Firewire power source (adapter brick or a port on a Mac)? That might give you the oomph required to wake it up.
I had not experienced any more shutdown hangs since early January until earlier this week when a newly acquired 6th Gen Classic with an HDD and running RB v4.0 started doing it. I have been able to force reboot it via holding the Select and Menu buttons, though sometimes it takes several tries.
I've also been experiencing a different hold switch related hang with the flash modded 6th Gens that flash white at shutdown, and I've figured out how to consistently make that one happen at will but I haven't had time to write up a report on that or on the one like you are experiencing. I hope to post about it all to the forum at some point this weekend.
