this one froze, too.  but i had Show Shutdown Message set to Yes for both exp builds.  should I also try them with it set to no?

i tried the 2nd build again twice - both with show shutdown msg set to yes - one with the hold switch engaged and the back light did not come on and it froze - and one with the hold switch unengaged and the light came on.

now i'll so the same except with show shutdown msg set to off.

then i've got to hit the hay - i'm sorry but at this point i'm too tired to keep all the details straight in my head.  i wish i knew a way to install these test builds on top of my configs/shortcuts/theme settings/etc.  i'm so dependent on that stuff and i forget how to do things in a pristine clean install environment.

standby one more time...

tried again with 2nd exp build:

show shutdown msg - no
hold switch unengaged
backlight did not come on after idle timeout
ipod froze

same with the hold switch engaged.

sorry, but i'm history until tomorrow.

thanks so much for what you do.

https://www.mediafire.com/file/e0991d67fobsvwa/iPod6G_rockbox_force_shutdown_backlight.zip/file

here is one which should force the backlight on on shutdown in any of the situations above

it should at least flash the backlight if shutdown message == YES

with it set to NO it should leave the backlight on and hopefully not crash

and a second one that does lcd_awake() only to see if thats the issue, I don't think it'll turn on the backlight but I might be wrong

I won't be able to try those two new exp builds until later today.  But I have a few quick thoughts and info to share while they're still in my head:

I set the LCD's Sleep (After Backlight Off) to 1 s and then awaited my Idle Poweroff 1min testing timeout without having the Hold Switch engaged.  At timeout the "Shutting down…" msg was displayed and the iPod shutdown.  Then, after waiting just a little bit longer for good measure, I tried restarting the iPod and it was not frozen.  So a big part of my own personal battery power conservation interests are met by just hastening LCD Sleep.  But of course, the freezing condition still exists and needs to be addressed.

From my observations and for my own purposes I can't think of any reason why I would need/want to have the ipod6g LCD awake while the backlight is off:  it reawakens instantaneously when I touch the click wheel, and for all intents and purposes I don't see any practical advantage to having the LCD unreadably awake when the backlight is off.

I did notice that if I set Sleep (After Backlight Off) to Always there was a bright white flash when the backlight turned off whereas if I set it to 1 s there was a nice normal smooth fadeout.

This is all with the ipod6g - some or all might be different on other iPod models and on other non iPod devices.

So, with the backlight off and the LCD asleep, the iPod shuts down without freezing if either Backlight on Hold is set to Normal or if the Hold Switch is not engaged.  For the sake of discussion (and not as a suggested solution), I have to naively ask, would the freeze be avoided if Rockbox just disregarded the Backlight on Hold setting at shutdown?

idk thats why i'm trying to get you a build that forces the backlight on so we can see if its that or something else

chris_s added the hide shutdown messages so at least one person doesn't like ignoring backlight on hold on shhutdown though
I've always argued it keeps this very scenario from happening without the user knowing

Both the force_shutdown_backlight and lcd_awake exp builds yielded these results:

With Backlight on Hold set to Off, and the Hold Switch engaged

No backlight or shutdown msg at Idle Poweroff timeout,
but also no freeze - I was able to restart by normal means

I wasn't asking about disregarding Show Shutdown Message, I was asking about disregarding Backlight on Hold being set to Off.  If Show Shutdown Message is set to No, is there any reason to turn on the backlight at shutdown?
