Current status of Rockbox install for Gigabeat S
philden:
I've just upgraded my Gigabeat S with a KingSpec 64GB ZIF SSD, and would like to install Rockbox. Looking at various forum posts I'm wondering how much of that information is outdated. I can put the SSD in a ZIF-USB adaptor and see both partitions on the drive, if that makes the install any easier. I can do this on Windows, though I am more experienced with Mac/Unix.
Unfortunately the 'Manual' link on https://www.rockbox.org/wiki/GigabeatSPort#Installation currently goes nowhere.
I assume that I need to download or create a new NK.bin file, and possibly use beastpatcher?
Thanks for any help!
Phil.
The Gigabeat F is so much easier. I have an iFlash solo, iPod 4G converter cable and 1.5TB microSD in that.

My S is partially broken, since I tried to use it with an F dock years back (not a good idea, pins are different).
But I don't recall ever having issues with a ZIF drive. again it's been some years for me now. Did you try this with a mechanical drive first, just to eliminate the ZIF SSD as a factor? Also what build are you using, the last stable one or a recent dev build? Reason why I ask is that I'm assuming the F/X/S's aren't really being developed for anymore so it's possible recent development builds aren't going to work - recent example and I edited another post of mine just now is flashwriter for the F/X which I cannot get to work anymore with recent builds.
Agreed btw on the F - a lot easier to work with. The X isn't bad either, just impossible to find in the US, I had to leverage Jauce some years back to get mine.

I'm not having any problems at the moment, just looking for the best way to install Rockbox. I haven't tried Rockbox at all on the Gigabeat S so far, I wanted to make sure I had a working SSD first.
LambdaCalculus:
If you've verified the SSD is working, the best thing to do would be hunt down the original Gigabeat S software and restore from that; I'm not sure if this applies to the Gigabeat S, but on the F/x models, the Gigabeat has to acknowledge the drive *before* it'll work with it through the OF. Once you've done that, then you can install Rockbox as described in the manual.
philden:
Thanks! I have the OF working OK on the SSD, but links to the manual for installation to the Gigabeat S are dead. Do you have a copy?
Thanks, Phil.
