ipod does not mount
« on: September 07, 2024, 08:37:54 AM »
I have an ipod classic 160gb and after installing rockbox it doesn't mount.  it is recognized as a new usb (plays the connected sound), but does not have a drive letter.  Matter of fact after a reboot it did pick up in itunes and was able to restore it to itunes firmware.  At which point it remounts.  Any help would be appreciated

Is this on windows or a mac (or linux)?

Does it mount if you boot it with original firmware? (I mean, if it does, then just use that for file transfer - not sure why you'd need to mount it in RB mode specifically).

(Not that I have much idea what the problem is, but I'm assuming anyone who _could_ help you would probably need to know those things, especially which OS you are mounting it with).

I'm running windows 11.

Yes, it did mount recognized by itunes and generated a drive letter with itunes, though i have had issues with that in the past (bad cable or ipod just not behaving).

I don't think my ipod is set for dual boot.  When i use menu + select it reboots the rockbox but doesn't put it into a disk mode.

The reason i've wanted to change over to rockbox is playing different formats.  Am I barking up the wrong tree?

If you reboot from rockbox into the apple firmware does the disk mount in windows?

Not sure i understand the question.  Do you mean restoring it to the itunes?  If that is the case it should then mount to windows.  I haven't seen a way to boot to apple with the rockbox software still on it.  if it is off pushing select launches rockbox.  From there if i select and menu (up) it reloads just rockbox.

If you reboot with the hold switch on, or while holding down "menu" it should reboot in the original firmware.  Are you saying yours doesn't do that?

Didn't know it would do that.  i tried holding both sel and menu and get put back to rockbox each time but i figured it out.  So unless i'm misunderstanding i put it to itunes mode to load music and rockbox to listen.  Thank the kind people who helped.  I am still considering modifying the ipod and am at the pc builder level more or less but this suggests that i could ruin the device

Please see the manual: https://download.rockbox.org/daily/manual/rockbox-ipod6g/rockbox-buildch3.html#x5-290003.1.3

Generally I recommend to NOT restart the player by holding Menu + Select to restart the player -- you only need this if you're running the Apple firmware, since that doesn't fully shut down the player. Rockbox shuts down the hardware, so you can simply shut it down, then press select to power it on again.

Also, during the power on sequence the Apple bootloader shortly waits for some key presses that you can use to switch into Apple disk mode (though you have to hard-reset the player to get out of that)

I think it's fair to say opinions vary on whether it's _necessary_ to put it into original firmware mode (or disk mode) to transfer music to it, but it's what I always do, and it seems safest (and fastest).  If your computer isn't mounting the drive at all in RB mode you might as well just use OF mode.  I can't even remember if the drive is _supposed_ to mount when it's in RB mode, as I never do it that way.

It isn't -- As long as you're using a nightly built from within the last month or so.

(And due to the nature of the underlying problems that led to this corruption, it _will_ eat itself under normal operation too, especially if the database is involved)

It is by default, but that can be changed in the settings.

ok, i went and messed things up, and before using rockbox at all i watched many videos and read the manual.   my ipod is mounting but isn't recognized in itunes.  Now its stuck in a usb mode (which is when it started being recognized by windows.  i tried uninstalling the bootloader and it doesn't see the ipod even when mounted (unable to activate drop down)

The ipod mounts to pc but not to itunes and no mount found in rockbox software
