How to make podcasts and music play nice with each other?
« on: September 13, 2024, 12:21:30 PM »
I have both podcasts (in the PODCASTS folder) and music (in the MUSIC folder) on my Sansa Clip using the latest release of rockbox. My issue is that when I listen to music, it overwrites the dynamic playlist and throws away my podcast playlist. What I'd like, ideally, is some way to have both co-exist. My music playlist doesn't change very often, maybe a reshuffle every 6 months or so, maybe swap a few songs in and out.

My podcast playlist tends to change monthly/weekly. Old ones are deleted, new ones are subbed in. Is this just not something rockbox can do for technical reasons, am I using it wrong, is there some way to make this work? I'd like to be able to listen to music for a bit, without losing the order my podcasts were in in the playlist, nor my progress within a given podcast episode (remembering where you were in a 6 hour audio file...bleh).

Or is the actual solution to just buy a second one and have one for music and one for podcasts? I don't love that idea, but given how cheap they are, it might be the better solution.

Sidebar: Are there any (good) open source Mp3 players? Eventually this thing will die and I want to have some plan on a replacement. I'm happy to solder everything together myself from parts. I just don't have the mind (currently) to figure out what to buy, how to lay it out, etc.

What I do is use playlists and automatic bookmarking. You can set it so once you create a bookmark for a playlist (and that playlist can be the one automatically generated for a folder), it will automatically make a new bookmark when you stop playback, but only in that playlist.

See the manual for more details, under General Settings --> Bookmarking, you can set it up a number of different ways.

You can also save that dynamic audio playlist so it doesn't wipe it out and have to regenerate it
