here i am again. 4 years later. my original post can be found here:
https://forums.rockbox.org/index.php/topic,53646.0.html back then i overlooked that i have to install rockbox on sd-card according to my creative zen x-fi 2 model which is DVP-FL0012: NAND based. you can look up here:
https://www.rockbox.org/wiki/CreativeZENXFi2Portwell i was stupid, and installed it directly on the hard disk of the player. several people told me that the player is pretty much lost. i accepted, and sold it just a month ago on the internet as broken player. recently i bought the exact same player back and this guy told me that he was able to fix it. don't ask me how. he said he needed 2 computers. anyway i wanted to pay him right away more in case of installing rockbox correctly but he refused. he said something is missing in the guides. i didn't ask further but took the player back. he was able to completely get rid of the installation failure, rockbox was completely gone and the player was back to it's original condition.
now here i am! this time i made sure that i installed everything on the sd card. i haven't touched the original hard disk. i tried to follow
https://www.rockbox.org/wiki/CreativeZENXFi2Port as best as i could:
- i downloaded " zenxfi2.zip" at
https://build.rockbox.org/. it is a prebuilt rockbox version for zen x-fi 2, and like mentioned in some guides, i unpacked it directly to the sd card. it created a folder called ".rockbox" with all the required files in it
- i downloaded "NAND-based: firmware_nand.sb" at the port page and renamed it to "firmware.sb"
- i downloaded the original creative firmware called "ZEN_X-Fi2_PCFW_L22_1_23_01.exe" at the creative page
- i put "firmware.sb"-file and "ZEN_X-Fi2_PCFW_L22_1_23_01.exe"
both on the sd-card directly into the ".rockbox"-folder as you can see on the screenshot
- then i launched the installer. i did this here like mentioned at the port page:
If you are unsure about your device type, download both: the installer will pick the right one provided that they are correctly named. Then get a copy of the latest firmware installer for the Creative Zen X-Fi2, usually called ZEN_X-Fi2_PCFW_L22_1_23_01.exe. Put the downloaded images in the same directory as the installer make sure they are correctly named (firmware.sb for NAND and firmware_sd.sb for SD). Plug your device, the OF will boot, now launch the installer: it should give you the opportunity to upgrade. Check that the proposed version is not 1.23.03, it should be 1234.5678.9012 for the NAND and 9876.5432.1098 for the SD. If you don't see those number, it will not work. - it gave me "1234.5678.9012 for NAND". i saw this number while upgrading, so i was like YEAH, when i installed it. but in the end it didn't work. current status is again the black screen with temperature and the info that the firmware is missing. sometimes it even switches to panic mode
ewwww! i hate this stupid player. sorry for my englisch and sorry for my lack of technical understanding. what did i wrong? according to some posts of people who have the same problems, people tell them that they did install the bootloader, but the rockbox firmware is missing. the ".rockbox"-folder. creating this folder fixed the problem for most of them, but i have this folder already on the sd-card. it was even my first step. i did the thing with the firmware and the installer aftewards. was it wrong to place and do everything directly on the sd-card in the ".rockbox"-folder? you can look here in this post. it is similar to my issue and the problem is fixed.
https://forums.rockbox.org/index.php?topic=52559.0this dude has the exact same model as me, and even the same problem. the other dude tells him to just use this prebuild version and create the ".rockbox"-folder on the sd card. and the dude with the problem is all of a sudden super chill! he even calls himself silly for overlooking. but hey, i am SILLY!
my name says it all...
i can boot the original firmware. if doing so, i get 2 drives. one is the sd card with the ".rockbox"-folder, the installer and the firmware-file. the other is probably the player drive, but it has just 15 mb storage, so i'm not sure. it is kind of gone like last time which makes it difficult. but due to the fact that this drive is generated when connecting the player to my computer, it is supposed to be the player's drive. when plugging it, i get the black screen and 2 drives are generated. sd card and the 15 mb storage drive.
are some interim steps missing? i skipped the "hide"-section with compiling and everything at
https://www.rockbox.org/wiki/CreativeZENXFi2Port and just did the mentioned things. .
i haven't tried any recovery procedure. it's anyway too difficult. i just did what i mentioned. please, please, please help!
this player ruins my life. i had it years ago and i loved rockbox on it. it was easier back then. now the manual installation is very heard for noobs like me with meh english skills. i love rockbox but not the technical aspect of it. it's like baking. if just one ingredient is off the entire cake can go wrong. i have access to a lot of players that are not supported by utility. in exchange, players that are covered by utility are extremely hard to get. i thought with my zen x-fi 2 i'm on the safe side, cause i already had it years before when the installation process was easier. i destroyed the same player twice. i think about destroying it completely now with a hammer and throw it in the river.
