Ipod mini 2nd gen corrupted and bricked | prev - Ipod turned read only [solved]
(1/1)
thinad:
I'm going to add a new issue while I try and fix things.
After fixing the issue below with fscks everything worked normally for a bit. Then I accidentally unplugged it while mounted and everything broke. I wasn't doing any writing to disk at that time. The letters on the usb charging screen turned into corrupted looking text. The letters underneath started scrolling to the left. I quickly reset it and got to a screen with a frowning ipod and a link to apple support, which I'm currently stuck on. Plugging it in gives a never seen before static charging screen.
There's only one fix I could find which is to boot up into disk mode and reset everything with itunes.
I can't boot into disk mode at all. According to the support tickets I found that means I'll have to bring it into support.
BUT I haven't done anything to damage the drive physically. Like I said it was caused by unplugging it while unmounted.
Any help would be appreciated. I can't boot into rockbox either.
I'll add that I've unplugged it while mounted lots of times on accident before the read only thing happened. Never got any errors or anything.
It's not recognized in /dev/sd*.
Update once again if anyone else is having this issue.
I was able to boot into disk mode. Don't follow apple's instructions as they don't work (at least for me). Turn the hold on then off and press the select and menu options until the screen turns blank. Press the select and pause buttons BEFORE the apple logo appears, not after like apple suggests. Worked first time for me.
Hopefully I don't have any hardware issues and everything will be back to normal
Nevermind. Something's serious wrong with it.
Disk mode won't stay for more than ten seconds AND over at least 5 hours I've only gotten it 4 times. Apple changed up their software and I can't install older itunes which supports it. Wouldn't be surprised if it was all planned obsolescence. And the manuals are all deleted or redirected. If it weren't for IA I wouldn't have been able to do anything.

Previous issue -
I installed rockbox on it some time ago and while it was plugged in I moved the one of the folders and it locked into read only mode. I don't think it's some firmware thing because it was just a folder.
I don't know what to do and I can't find help online or in this forum. I can output any commands or do whatever. There isn't much to explain. Thanks in advance.
thinad:
this is the output of manually mounting it.
# mount /dev/sda2 /media/user/ipodmini
mount: /media/user/ipodmini: WARNING: source write-protected, mounted read-only.
I'll try to find more fixes but it may be the device's problem. no clue why though

So I ran fsck. I didn't really know what it did. So I asked ai and tried to do what I thought was best.
One thing I noticed was that it recognized the folder that caused it to turn read only. Or the last folder I moved before it happened. It's /.rockbox/backdrops/

I think I might be able to figure it out.

Okay update. I solved it. I don't know if it was a temporary fix that was a side effect of messing it up even further or if I actually fixed it.
I ran it again and tried my best to learn about what everything was. This is what I chose each time.

Anyways I'll leave this up as a solution but I don't really know if I solved it completely as I lack the technical knowledge.
I completely bricked it into a support screen. Don't know if it's related but it's the first time that's happened.
