Thinking about Rockbox

Hi all,

No doubt I am the millionth to ask these questions

I have gen 6 iPod classic. I have had upgraded to 400g but am now at a stage with my song library the Apple OS can no longer cope.

My music library is over 50k of tracks. Apple OS stalls at this quantity. They are mostly mp3 and AAC files.

Is Rockbox my answer.


I really don’t care about audio quality as my iPod lives in the car. I just want all of my library in one place.


Is this what I should be looking for or do I just suck it up and have a reduced library on my iPod

RB gets round the "maximum number of tracks" problem that arises with the original firmware, if that's what you are asking (I think I have over 100,000 tracks on mine).

In my experience it still isn't entirely reliable for synching tracks in flash modded ipods, though, but you can copy files in the original firmware's disk mode, which avoids that issue.  Also, building the database takes so  long that I tend not to bother, and just use the file-browser and playlists.

Downside is, as you say you use it in the car, that an rockboxed ipod won't necessarily play well with every external device (that's Apple's doing, though, I think - many devices decide not to work if it's not recognised as an unmodified Ipod, and I gather there's some sort of stupid encryption involved)

As fasr as I am aware, the "disl corruption" problems that affected the 3.15 release are long since resolved.  Just use the daily builds.

As for building the database -- you can use the so-called 'database tool' running on your local system instead.

Anything that uses IAP-over-USB won't work, because of Apple DRM, enforced by their cadre of lawyers.  The older serial-based IAP works fine.

I have around 65,000 songs on my Rockbox iPod. I find the best way to use the database is to manually delete the database files whenever I add more music. Building the database from nothing is much quicker than updating it.
