How to manually update rockbox to latest nightly (creative zen)

I have an older version of rockbox on my creative zen and its very buggy and was hoping I could update to fix some of the larger bugs and potentially make it more stable, but the rockbox utility iirc doesn't work for it so I had to download a premade bootloader, I was just wondering how I upgrade and if there are any important things I should know about updating as opposed to doing a fresh install (I don't want to brick my player)

1. Make a copy of the existing .rockbox dir as a backup.
2. Download a dev build zip and extract it over the existing files.
