Bones Theme
« on: April 19, 2024, 04:16:21 PM »
Hello, new to Rockbox/returning to iPod classics.

I'm trying to get the new minimal Bones theme to work on my 6th Gen iPod Classic...the font and wps files work but the while-playing-screen itself doesn't match the beautiful samples listed in the theme page. Maybe it's because the bmp files aren't being copied in the right place? I'm not sure.

Decided to give this skin a spin.

EDIT: See subsequent posts.

OK, I'm finished working with this theme now.

I made a few edits:
  • Modified the Track display to also include the playlist track total
  • Changed the clock on the lock screen to correctly display in either 12 or 24 hour mode
  • Replaced the 'xxx' string on the lock screen with AM or PM only if in 12 hour clock mode (otherwise no string)
  • Pregenerated correct theme config files with the complete color information (Black,Green and Orange)
  • Added bitrate and samplerate to the codec display
  • When repeat mode is set to 'shuffle' (the longest string) REPEAT is replaced with RPT because of space occupied by file information

I've attached the replacement WPS and CFG files in this post.

I'll attach more screenshots in another reply (4 attachment limit per post).
* BONES.wps (2.26 kB - downloaded 364 times.)
* BONES Orange.cfg (0.58 kB - downloaded 302 times.)
* BONES Green.cfg (0.58 kB - downloaded 286 times.)
* BONES Black.cfg (0.58 kB - downloaded 325 times.)

Loving this theme. Wondering if you could make a version with album art? Maybe under the Track Number, shifting the song and artist over? I tried doing it myself but couldn't get it to work for some reason.

Thanks.

Took a page out of Widepod and tried this for an idea. Obviously doesn't work great with white album art, the theme engine could probably do with some way to get colour info from album art, but this would be a cool addition to BONES.

One thing I discovered in the sim is that the usb screen doesn't remove the default USB image, hence messing up the skull icon. I don't know if the creator will see this, but you can fix this by making a %Vi viewport with 1 width and height (zero will cause crash).

Not sure if you were speaking to me, however I wanted to make clear I didn't create this theme, I just tried to fix some of its issues!

I had considered adding album art, but I decided against it as I couldn't think of a way to do it wthout ruining the minimal design of the skin.

For example, the album year isn't shown either and the album is only shown as a scroller that alternates between the artist and album. Ideally I would want all of these separate fields but by the time all of this is crammed on the screen I may as well just use the reFresh skin I modified here.

New to Rockbox and this is the only theme I can stomach (and read with my horrible old man eyes)

I'm surprised there's no simple battery icon on the now playing screen - I notice there's one on the lock screen, but since the backlight times out more or less immediately I can't easily check it.

Hi, I'm new to using rockbox, and I'm currently enjoying the format of this theme, but I was wondering if someone could maybe modify the font for the wps, like unifont or something, since I have a lot of japanese and chinese songs that aren't appearing. Thanks a lot!

You could put the desired font into the font folder inside the .rockbox folder (you can download fronts from the extras page). Then modify the BONES.wps file (#__Preload Fonts section). See: https://www.rockbox.org/wiki/CustomWPS.html#Fonts

Good luck modifying.

Kind regards

I've been wanting to play around with creating something like this ever since seeing BONES, would you mind sharing the WPS config you used?

One idea I had to be able to "dim" the image would be to use the theme engine's ability to draw transparency with magenta, by using a "dithered" checkerboard, so a 320x240 checkerboard of black and magenta pixels, and draw that OVER the album art if it's possible.

Here's the edited WPS file: https://files.d00k.net/rockbox/BONES.wps

I've labelled the change so it's easier to see. I tried dimming it in a similar fashion using a 50% opacity grey bitmap, but unfortunately it doesn't work as it clashing with the text drawing. There could be a way around it with some trial and error, but I can see it running into design issues with contrast on certain tracks.

Can we draw gradients with opacity in the theme engine?
