A Couple of Issues
« on: July 25, 2006, 05:15:00 PM »
Let me just say I am enjoying rockbox thoroughly and have generally had little problems with it. However I wanted to see if anyone else had experienced the following couple of issues:

1) Last night I had my ipod nano plugged into the computer (in file mode) and shut the computer down. The ipod reacts by displaying the 'ok to disconnect' message (normally this is fine). However, I never unplugged it and when I tried to use my I pod this morning, the battery had drained. I assume that the 'ok to disconnect' message never switched off. Is this a bug and should I report this? I would expect that after a while the ipod would shutdown to preserve battery.

2) If I boot into the original apple firmware in file mode and try to navigate to my music directory from my computer, my computer asks me whether I wish to format the drive! (WinXP) All the other directories (calendars, contacts etc) are fine but I cannot access my music directory without my computer wanting to format it! Very annoying as I hear that it is much faster to transfer files if using the apple firmware.

TIA

Dan

2)  What apple firmware version do you have installed on your nano?  There have been issues similar to this with apple's firmware update (version 1.1.2 for the nano).  You can either "hide" your ipod_control folder in another folder if you no longer want to use i-tunes to transfer your music, or you can downgrade to another firmware version (1.1.1 or the 03-23-2006 updater).  This will resolve the "format" issue.

1) The mode your iPod is in while it is plugged into a computer via USB is the iPod's disk mode. Any issues with it should be taken up with Apple, as (for now) Rockbox has no USB mode.

I am interested to hear this.  Why then does the iPod show a different charging screen while plugged in under Rockbox to what it does when plugged in under the Apple firmware?  The Apple firmware charging screen is nicer, in my opinion, being in color.  But more importantly, the backlight will come on with the Apple firmware while charging, but not with Rockbox.

OK.  Rockbox does not yet have a USB protocol for connectivity on the ipods, so it was decided that this function would be turned over to the iPod's emergency disk mode.  This emergency disk mode exists so that the iPod would still be able to connect to a user's computer in the case that the ipod's firmware was corrupted, to be able to restore the iPod to a useable state.  Thus if you find the emergency disk mode too visually unpleasant, take it up with Apple.  Rockbox has nothing to do with this.
