I don't really know (not being a developer) but just a thought, in case it saves you having to open the thing up - does system/debug/View disk info tell you anything useful?  [it recognises iFlash adaptors, don't know if it says anything specific about the SSD]

Ah, sorry, I'm being stupid, if you can't get rockbox to run you can't get to that option!
