issue with Ver. 92e77ddbd8-231119?

Hi, I hope someone can help, I've loaded Rockbox 1000's of times for iPod customers, today I've loaded it onto two 7th Gen iPod Classics and they both just hang on the Rockbox start up screen, I've never seen this before and as the same thing is happening on two devices Im guessing there is an issue with the daily build? anyone have any idea I've wiped all cards and loaded it back on fresh twice.

I've annswered my own question loading the Stable release 3.15 has sorted them both.

Curious as to what the most recent dev version you found you could use and not have the problem.  Although you say 3.15 works for you, that is fairly old and misses a lot of nice improvements.

  Only asking because I've just had the same issue and found that this ipod (7th gen) freezes on the boot screen with the 231122, 231121, 231120 and 231119 versions.  It seemed to start booting OK again when I reverted back to 231118.

  Might be a premature concern, as it's quite possible it's the ipod itself, maybe disk corruption when copying the rockbox files onto it?  But curious that it sounds like the same issue you had.  Going to test with other 7th gen ipods and see if it happens to all of them with post 231119 releases.

Well I'm now completely confused.  Tried another 7th gen and it worked OK when I updated RB to the 231119 build, but then when I tried the 231122 build it hung on booting like the first ipod.  Same with 231121.

So both of them hang on 231122 and 231121 builds and both work with 231118 or earlier, but one seems to work with 231119 while the other doesn't.

Still more confused.  Tried a 6th gen (as opposed to 7th gen) and it worked fine with 231123 build.  Haven't tried it with earlier builds yet.

These results are very inconsistent, so maybe it's something specific to my computer or all these ipods (I wonder if it depends on what the current .cfg file is, on a given ipod?), but generally builds after 231118 _seem_ like they might have a problem.  Could the OP try a build more recent than 3.15 but not the latest one?

according to CH23 on IRC, it only gets stuck on the logo after a 2nd boot.

Can you try a build that reverts commit 35f9a5b from 231119?  Seems like that's the only change from 231118 to 231119 that could possibly (?) cause an issue during booting.

edit: Apparently builds from both the 19th and 20th have 19 as the date in their version string (one is 92e77ddbd8-231119, the other is a7d0ff2000-231119)

Did the latter cause any issues for you?

[Edited]  I had the same boot screen hang yesterday when using Rockbox Utility to install yesterday's dev build on top of my 7th Gen Classic's Rockbox installation - tried it from both Mac and Windows with the same result.  So I deleted my .rockbox folder, downloaded rockbox-ipod6g-20231122.zip and unzipped it as a clean install onto my iPod and then it booted fine.  So then I tried manually re-adding my personalized config, tagnavi, theme, etc, files and got the hang again.  I assumed there was some incompatibility with something in one or some of my personalized files but haven't yet found it.  Today I will try again with the new dev build.

I just now tried again using Rockbox Utility on Windows to install 5c60975d4f-231123 on top of my personalized 873f49b1f0-230829 installation, and it hung again on the boot screen.  Then I downloaded rockbox-ipod6g-20231123.zip, did a clean install, and it booted fine.

Later today I will incrementally re-add my personalized components to the clean installation to see if I can pinpoint where it's failing for me.  I will also try everything with a 5.5 Gen Video, 4th Gen Color, and 2nd Gen mini.

I think I've found a significant clue:

About a half hour had passed while I made and ate my breakfast.  During that time my iPod auto shutdown from the clean installation of 5c60975d4f-231123, so I tried to reboot it to begin trying to re-add my personalized config, tagnavi, etc files to the clean installation.  But the clean installation hung on the boot screen.  I tried rebooting three times and it hung each time.  Then I booted into bootloader USB mode and looked at the files in my .rockbox directory and noticed that nvram.bin.new was newly created and modified.  So I deleted it and was then able to successfully reboot into full operation.  Then I rebooted again and the iPod hung.  So again I booted into bootloader USB mode, deleted nvram.bin.new and was able to successfully fully reboot.

Yes, I think the problem involves nvram.bin.new.

I restored my personalized 873f49b1f0-230829 installation and again used Rockbox Utility to install the current dev build on top of it.  But before rebooting from the Apple firmware into Rockbox I deleted nvram.bin.old and nvram.bin.new, just leaving nvram.bin (which was left over from the prior state of my 873f49b1f0-230829 installation).  Then I was able to successfully and fully boot into my new personalized Rockbox installation.  Now it seems I can successfully reboot every time if I first go through bootloader USB mode and delete nvram.bin.new.

It seems that I have the same issue on my Fuze v1. If I delete de nvram files it boots fine but when I turn on the player again it shows a white screen with this error:

The latest build that works in my Fuze v1 is the a7d0ff2000 and it can be found in "dev builds -> older builds".
What I have found is that if I download the latest version of rockbox (the zip file) from git.rockbox.org to compile it and I try it on my player it works fine but if I get the latest version using git "clone git://git.rockbox.org/rockbox" and I try on my player I get the white screen. The revision from the zip file doesn't have the".git" folder while the other one has it. Maybe the bug is in the ".git" folder.

Comparing the files of the good build and the bad build with a program call freefilesync I saw that rockbox.sansa file was different. So I put the bad build on my player and I replaced the rockbox.sansa file with the one from the good build and it works. I didn't find any info about what this file does, is it the core of rockbox?. I hope this could help.

Not got the energy right now to continue experimenting, but all the ipods I was looking at the other day now boot, and they all seem to report version 231112 (pretty sure it was, technically, version 231118 I last copied to them, but they 'self-identify' as 231112, for whatever that's worth).

OK, tried yet _another_ ipod (7th gen) and it does seem to boot with 231119 (a7d0ff2000).  Not sure why the very first one I tried wouldn't boot even with 231119, but that's two that do seem to work with that version.  But none seem to work with 231120 or later.

Sansa Clip+ has this issue too.

I install new daily builds every other day on my Clip+ 8GB. Until recently they were all working fine.
The last good one was: a7d0ff2000 from 2023-11-19.

Then, with version 92e77ddbd8 from 2023-11-20 (or from 19th?) the Sansa Clip+ hangs on me directly after boot. (If relevant, it says "Prefetch abort...", like reported above by a Fuze user)
OF works fine though.
I tried another Sansa Clip+ (with 4 GB), and it shows the same behaviour.

This error happens with versions:

• 92e77ddbd8 from 2023-11-20
• 5c60975d4f from 2023-11-23
• 53a47970e3 from 2023-11-24

Interestingly, the version "72c539d35e from 2023-11-22" does not have this error.
This may help the developers finding the bug.

I did these tests by downloading the very daily builds from https://www.rockbox.org/dl.cgi?bin=sansaclipplus and unzipped them onto the Clip+.
And I use LSE5 theme, if it is important.

PS: I can confirm that when it hangs, we can go into OF and delete rockbox' file "nvram.bin.new", then rockbox will start fine on next boot, but will create that file again, leading to hanging again on next boot...
