Rockbox playback trigger via USB?

Is there any way to send commands to the iPod to play specific files while it's attached via USB? CLI control is what I'm thinking.

Then I could keep it charging and remote control playback via my phone instead of having to walk over to the device for fine-tuning.

Rockbox doesn't implement IAP-over-USB (requires bidirectional authentication) but does support the older IAP-over-serial protocol.

USB doesn't have a standard "remote control" protocol defined (along the lines of Bluetooth's AVRCP) so youd have to create something custom, and implement both ends.

I can try the IAP-over-serial protocol -- are there any docs or wikis that can give me a headstart? If not, got any code samples or specific files to look at? I'm using an Apple iPod Video (5g), and am happy to implement some custom handling.
