Of course, it works with a BT headphone. It's just that cars now are phone oriented, and obviously simple BT transmitters do not provide all the handshake the car is waiting for.

My only experience of modern vehicles are the Mercedes work vans and they offer to connect either with straight Bluetooth or using Android Auto or Apple Carplay(?).  Perhaps a careful read of the user manual for the car radio may offer a pointer in this direction?

(my own car has an older simple Bluetooth radio that predates modern ICE systems)
