Possible to abort (re)building the database while in progress?

Is there a way to abort the (re)building of the database while it's in progress?  I'm looking for a clean way to [edit: complete completely] terminate the process in order to do some other disk related tasks, and then reinitialize the database and rebuild it again from scratch.  Thanks.
