Lag when navigating folders with xduoo x3 ii

I've been using Rockbox since the Iriver IHP120 days - it used to have a disk cache option to allow quick browsing of file folders.
When using the Xduoo X3 II there can be lag of at least a few seconds or longer when navigating file folders in the SD card. This did not happen on a prior sansa clip zip. I don't see a disk cache option anymore although since this is an SD card it probably doesn't make sense.
Any solutions or ideas?
