Generic MP4 players?

(1/3) > >>

Hi, I'm new here, so I'd like to apologize if I'm posting in the wrong place.

I would like to ask if it is possible for you to make a version for a generic MP4 that is sold in China. I don't know what his exact model would be, but I believe it's a white-label. And because of that, there are 3 (or more) players with literally the same format, hardware and everything else that is the same.

In some stores like Amazon, its name is said to be "Wodgreat MP4", check this out:

Or even Ruizu:

I've looked everywhere for different names, but I can't find anything similar. I would love, if possible, to be able to play Doom on it. Thanks in advance.

The hardware may seem generic to you but it is actually something specific. Open up the device, see what the hardware is. I think a lot of those super cheap devices are very limited and probably can't run rockbox, but I'm not sure about the models you linked.

I will buy it tomorrow. So I don't currently have it in hand; but I'll definitely open it to find out more, and I believe it can run Rockbox. Since it comes with two games already pre-installed; Sokoban and the snake game. And it even already has a system of lyrics synchronized with the music, which I don't know how it works, but I've seen videos showing it. Anyway, I would very much like to be able to open doors to a new way not only for myself, but for other users of the same device also to install Rockbox.

Sound a bit like the discussion and exploration in this thread: https://forums.rockbox.org/index.php/topic,54269.0.html

Just because it seems capable does not always make it so. Rockbox needs a bit of memory to perform basic functions. Many of those cheap players have a SoC that can decode/play music (implemented in hardware) but has very little memory.

Having updatable firmware might help analyzing the capabilities.

Almost all Ruizu players use ATJ2127 SOC (same as Clip Sport), If I'm not mistake some also use a weak Rockchip SOC which is also not support Rockbox

These are based on an Actions Semiconductor ATJ2127 chips, with under 100KB of available memory and all audio decoding happening inside dedicated hardware. A rockbox port to these (and other ATJ2127) targets will not happen, as it would require an immence undertaking and due to resource limitations, the end result would lack most of the features that rockbox users have come to expect.
