Okay, it looks like _every_ I/O operation failed the first time, and a soft reset was needed to fix it.
So let's try always doing a soft reset when powering up:

Same result as before. Kingspec SSD works OK, the CF/uSD won't load a theme and Panics when trying to build the database:
