That's talking about the lba mode supported by the apple driver which doesn't matter if you are running rockbox.

the only way I can figure is by splitting them to separate ~2TB partitions we have multi volume code

That is true, but there are good reasons for using both operating systems. Many docks work better with the Apple firmware, and it is the only way of using docsk that extract the digital signal. So I'd always go for a 7th gen rather than a 6th.
