iPod 5.5 is very slow while playing music
« on: August 28, 2021, 07:23:41 PM »
I have an iPod 5.5 that I installed Rockbox on, and after some initial database and EQ issues, I've got my device sounding the way I want. However, my device is very slow. Skipping tracks is decently fast until it needs to load a new track to RAM, which takes a while. I have replaced the HDD with a SD card, so this shouldn't take that long. Also trying to do things on the device is very slow, it takes me almost a minute just to go back to browsing my music even using the files option. It's faster to restart my iPod if I want to manually select a new song.

Are there any custom builds or old versions or development versions that I could use to improve performance?

Your player has an 80 MHz CPU from the early 90s, so if you're trying to decode an expensive format, using lots of EQ bands, etc you're going to max out the CPU pretty quickly. Not much you can do about that.

Two of them actually, so couldn't the UI easily run on the second processor?

Also, I'm just using VBR MP3s with some 320, 192, 160, and 128kbps MP3 files. Nothing lossless or very expensive afaik. I'm also only using the perceptual bass enhancement and treble EQ settings.

MP3 actually uses both cores for decoding, but the UI does not. Each EQ band will use several additional MHz. I'm not sure about PBE. Does the problem go away if you turn off those effects?

Appears so, but the audio is much worse without those.

Try using fewer EQ bands?

I don't have any EQ bands set though, only those two options.

5th gens seem to just be slow.  If you're using an iFlash adaptor, maybe you have a lot of tracks, and the 5th gen seems to struggle with that (possibly it depends whether it's the 32mb ram or 64mb ram model?  I haven't really tested whether there's a difference there).

7th gens seem to be much more responsive when used with an iFlash.

I think I have 3000-4000 songs total, but the directory I'm using in files has less than 2000.

Do you still have the problem with the current dev build? Could be related to the flash storage you're using.

I've decided to go though my music collection, converting 48kHZ songs to 44.1kHZ, and making sure I still like some songs. When I will actually get around to doing it, I don't know when, but when I do, I will put it on my device and see if it's faster.

With ~1500 songs with the dev build, it's pretty much the same speed as it was, maybe even a little slower, but I'm not sure about that.
