The Future of Rockbox's IRC channels?

(1/1)

LambdaCalculus:
I know this post isn't 100% Rockbox related, but I still feel like it's extremely vital to bring up.

If anyone hasn't heard, the old freenode IRC network has a new owner, and, well... suffice to say it ain't looking too good:

https://boingboing.net/2021/05/19/freenode-irc-staff-quit-after-new-owner-seizes-control.html

Most Freenode staff have already jumped ship and created a new IRC network: Libera.Chat: https://libera.chat/

Now, here's a big question for the Rockbox staff: what's going to happen to the #rockbox and #rockbox-community IRC channels? I have already seen a great number of channels jumping to new networks, and I wonder if Rockbox will be making a similar jump in the near future as well.

All things considered with the new owners of Freenode, I wouldn't want to give them neither the time of day nor even a bag of dog poop. I hope the Rockbox staff finds it in them to do the right thing and consider getting away from Freenode.

gevaerts:
People are watching things closely. At this point I'd say it's very unlikely that we stay on freenode. It's unclear where exactly we'd move to. I can't say too much about it, because I'm trying to avoid being too deeply involved in the decision :) (We have active people again these days! Luxury!)

LambdaCalculus:
I know most of the old timers have moved onto bigger and better projects in life, but I know the active folks will make the right decisions!

speachy:
We've "officially" moved the #rockbox and #rockbox-community IRC channels to the libera network.

Channel logging has been switched, as well as the other support bots.

All that remains is to set the topics on the old channels to point at the new ones, and that has to wait until someone with channelop rights is awake.  :D

Word is that freenode staff are making their way into channels and forcibly changing channel topics to not refer to channel moves, claiming it "violates Freenode policy" or some such BS. At least in most cases, most projects and communities are putting the word out elsewhere to help keep the news available.
