Latest Apple Firmware - Is it necessary?

I only use Rockbox, not the apple firmware. Because of this, is it necessary to keep apple firmware up to date?

Not at all. If you never boot into the Apple firmware, there is very little to no reason to update it, unless you hear that they've fixed the Emergency Disk Mode's slow speeds (which they have not with the current update, and are probably quite unlikely to do ever anyway).
