That depends on your definition of "better". The iRiver H series has excellent sound, as does the Toshiba Gigabeat. The Sansa Clip Zip is small, sounds great, and runs Rockbox smoothly.

Personally, I just upgraded my 6th gen iPod Classic to 1TB of flash storage, a new case, and a new battery. Rockbox is running well and sounding lovely.

If you're happy with your iPod Classic, what's to improve?

Thanks

The Ipod llassic gives a very good sound.
I got also a FiiO  X7 MK 2 at double the price but it is not as flexible
for instance I cannot tune my Iem's s as well because rhere is no parametric eq

otherwise the FiiO sounds a little bit wider and airy

Ii am always looking to find a better sound,  I am probably an audiophile !!

If you are applying EQ then you are not an audiophile.  ;)

re: the iRiver H100 & H300 players: they are very nice, I have one of each, and they run Rockbox perfectly.  But their headphone output does have noticeable hiss with very sensitive low impedance IEMs such as most balanced armature versions.  With dynamic driver IEMs or any regular headphone it's not an issue.  For 16-bit 44100 Hz files the players are fine, very nice.  The H100 series players (but not the H300) have a proper line out (physically separate output) which can also be used as an optical out, so you can always pass the output to a separate amp.  Right now I'm listening on my H140 (modded with 512GB microSD) with full size Sennheiser Momentum M2 headphones and it's great.  But when I use my multiple BA IEMs I do find the hiss intrusive and use the line out to a small amp velcro'd to the rear of the player.

Pretty much how I see it.

In my case I still have my Gigabeat F/X's and my X is actually working with an iFlash SD adapter (the only one that ever worked for it).   Great sound, pocket friendly, very stable.   I seem to just keep going back to them, in the end.

Just hope batteries are available for a long time to come.  Or maybe I should stock up on them.
