creative zen x-fi2 manual installation failure - part 2
« on: November 12, 2020, 02:14:49 PM »
hi! i was really stupid  :'(, and i hope somebody can help me.

i bought a CREATIVE ZEN X-FI2. i used to have it years ago, and when i remember right, back then ROCKBOX UTILITY was supported. now not more, and i was forced to manually install it. now comes the issue.

it was late, and i overlooked that a micro sd card has to be inserted for my model, which is DVP-FL0012. you can look here:

https://www.rockbox.org/wiki/CreativeZENXFi2Port

so i went ahead, and installed joyfully rockbox without micro sd directly on the hard disk of the player. the result is that the player doesn't work correctly anymore. i get this weird black screen with text like on the picture. sometimes even followed by a white screen with even weirder numbers.

yes, i can boot the OF during the black screen. but unfortunately the device appears not as hard disc anymore neither on my laptop, nor on my computer. or i can't access at least. no hard disc visible, if plugged in during black screen, or plugged in when the OF is booted.

i inserted a micro sd card afterwards, and when i copy the folder i got from here https://build.rockbox.org/ on it, i get kind of ROCKBOX. but not working correctly of course. also then my computer just recognizes the micro sd card hard disk, but the one from the player still doesn't show up.

did i smash it? i was looking an eternity for the player, it is still relatively new, and i am a complete noob in techniques, and also in english. so please tell me what to do, and keep it noob friendly  ;D! i would be grateful eternally! i am super sad now about this. there is a similar thread here in this category, but i guess the problem is slightly different.

I have a ZEN X-fi2 but it is the DVP-FL0015 version, it looks like you need to recover your device back to the stock Creative firmware, do you have the original firmware? then once you get the player back to Creative firmware re-install the correct Rockbox bootloader.

If you are having problems restoring you player your best bet would be to try and contact pamaury on IRC for help with the restore procedure, pamaury was the creator of the Rockbox port for this player but he is not around as often these days so you might have to keep checking back.

thanks for the answer, and the redirection! i will contact this person, and ofc i can wait for a reply. the recovery stuff on the X-FI2 page is way too difficult for me. the stuff about LINUX/ WINDOWS, so i hope he can help me with it. it's a new player. not getting it to work again would be smashing for me.

gotcha! with the model DVP-FL0015 you are allowed to go without micro sd card, so i assume you installed the ROCKBOX SOFTWARE directly onto the hard disk of the player? i know that i have to restore the CREATIVE OF, and i have it, it is still offered on the CREATIVE page, but the hard disk is not recognized anymore. that's the problem. without hard disk on my computer, no restoration possible.

thank you, thank you, thank you! also to all others who might have some tips for me! it's my 5th rockbox player in life. i really thought i would be able to master it, he he!   :-X

Just for the record, we never removed support for a player from Rockbox Utility. The xfi3 was added in 2013, but the xfi2 never followed, so the original install must have been a manual one.

see, so i not remembered right. but back then i had obviously the model where a micro sd card wasn't required, because it was indeed easier to get ROCKBOX on this player.

i haven't contacted the creator of the ZEN X-FI2 page yet. after plugin in, and trying over, and over, the screen went all black, and nothing happens anymore at all. no battery charging, no sign of life, it's completely dead. and, yes. it was a new player. even originally wrapped.

no clue what happened exactly. maybe all the rebooting, adding the ROCKBOCK firmware on the original hard disk, resulted in a broken player. makes no sense anymore to contact him. i've tried various cables, and loading stations. all combinations of button pressing a thousand times, but nothing.

thank you, guys!

ok! i let the player rest for a couple of days/ weeks, and now everything works like before.

my computer also recognizes the original hard disk now, but it is not accessible. also formatting doesn't work.

i can reboot the OG. i can reboot the broken ROCKBOX version, when i have the data i posted above on a micro sd, but i am just not able to overwrite/ repair the OG anymore. whenever i plug it in, and connect it to my computer, i get the black screen, and the hard disk is not accessible.

i will write him now, and share it here. but i am also grateful for any tips!
