playing wavpack files on a 7th generation ipod classic
« on: July 01, 2020, 09:21:20 AM »
hi,

i am considering buying a 7th generation ipod classic.

in doing some research, i found a site that says that wavpack is the combination of a lossy file, and a correction file - the combination of both give a lossless reproduction

but rockbox only plays the lossy portion

do you know if the current version of rockbox produces a lossless sound ?  or just a lossy sound ?

Lossless wavpack is supported, but correction files are not, so you'd need to merge the correction file on your PC first. The reason for this is how the buffering system in rockbox works. There is no good way to have it simultaneously buffer two independent files from storage at the same time.

merging files is probably beyond my ability.  only 1 wv file is created.

how does the playing of the lossy version compare to the playing of an mp3 ?

you could convert to flac, but the filesize would probably be significantly bigger.

i contacted david bryant, the creator of wavpack

it is a lossless file

following is the properties of a song.  anything that raises an eyebrow ?

sample rate = 44,100 hz

channels = 2

bits per sample = 16

bit rate = 812 kbps

codec = wavpack

codec profile = wavpack high

encoding = lossless

tag type = apev2

embedded cuesheet = no

Rather than ask the developers, it would probably be a better idea to just read the instructions for the encoder you're using.

gosh, i cant imagine anyone more knowledgeable about wavpack than the creator of the product

i felt fortunate i was able to contact him

i now know that the file that i have is a lossless file

that had been my previous understanding, until i read about the lossy and the correction

i am once again confident that rockbox will be able to play my lossless wavpack files

Yes, but asking dumb questions wastes everyone's time, even if you find it slightly easier.
