Rockboy -- Crystalis keeps crashing in mountain areas

I am playing the GBC version of Crystalis and pretty often get a message about some plugin failing. I can never read the full message before it crashes. What always happens is I am wandering around one of those areas that is neither a dungeon not a village and then it crashes, and sometimes the layout of the area in the games gets altered; the mountains move and (if it doesn't crash) I have to go though the same stretch again; or I get a checkered pattern of black squares, text, and dirt/mud/whatever.
