Disabling or removing Apple firmware on iPod Classic?
« on: May 15, 2020, 02:03:53 AM »
Hey all. I am trying to use Rockbox on a 6th Gen iPod Classic 80Gb, which has the storage limitation under the Apple firmware. I have 512Gb flash storage in it, which will only fully work with rockbox; in the Apple firmware it shows as 128Gb. My problem is once Rockbox is working fine, certain combinations such as having the hold switch on or plugging it into a charger when the iPod is off will trigger the Apple firmware, which promptly converts my 512Gb storage down to 128Gb and corrupts it. The only solution is to format and reload Rockbox. Is there any way to disable the dual-boot feature so only Rockbox boots? I saw a 7 year old thread where someone did something similar by editing the bootloader, but I have no idea how to do this. Is there any simple solution?

I don't think I'd remove the OF but how about switching to a different button or something

What I saw in a different thread was someone changed the bootloader so that the hold switch wouldn't trigger the Apple firmware, only holding the menu button would, but I have no idea how easy that would be to implement.

Here is the thread:

If someone wants to look at the bootloader, checking if the disk size is actually compatible with the Apple firmware before trying to boot into it would be a nice feature.
