Rockbox + SSD in 2020?
« on: April 26, 2020, 10:50:14 PM »
I have an old iPod 5.5G (the 80GB one)that I want to install an SSD. The problem I’m facing is that apparently Rockbox can experience issues with them. Now, I have two questions regarding this. First, has it been fixed? Because the majority of complaints I see about these issues are 2-3 years old already, and there has been a lot of development that has happened since. Second, is it just the iFlash adapters that are causing problems? Would there be less issues if I just got a standard ZIF adapter or a ZIF SSD? Because I want to get an SSD, but I need Rockbox as well...

I think most of the SSD problems are on the 6g, which really does not want to work with anything but the stock HDD.

A Super Talent Duradrive ZT3 ZIF SSD works perfectly im my 5.5g iPod with OF and Rockbox. I just had to seat the ribbon cable tight.

Really? That's great! If you don't mind me asking, how much better does it work? Does it run faster because the drive doesn't have to spin up, or is it just to make the battery last longer?

I did a battery bench and using the SSD I got 27 hrs of continuous playback (320 kbps mp3) vs. 22 hrs with the original HDD. I also noticed a sligtly quicker file access.

The Super Talent drives are not available anymore, but there are several 1.8" ZIF SSDs (those without housing) on the net, but I can't speak for those.

Does it still take a long time to skip through songs? Right now I usually have to wait about 5 seconds to get to the next song after pressing the button, and that’s the main reason I want an SSD...

There is still a short lag, but not annoying.
