iriver H340 w/ SD2CF adapter: ATA error -42

I've a standard fair CF to 1.8" IDE adapter and a SD2CF adapter (Komputer Bay Professional).

I've no way to test the former but the latter certainly works and tested the SDCard directly as well as through the CF adapter with a CF to 2.5" IDE USB adapter. Works fine.

But when rockbox bootloader starts up it reports ATA error: -42.

Ideas?
