Rockbox hdd alternative
« on: January 15, 2020, 09:07:11 PM »
Hello  I have rockbox on a ipod 5g (video) and am looking for an alternative to the OEM harddrive that will just work properly.  My iFlash Quad works fine accept when writing to the disk it fails with IO errors and the ipod unmounts.  Im just looking for an hassle free alternative that will work proprerly with the inbuilt USB driver.  Any suggestions? I would prefer solid state and need at least 128GB  im looking at using one of these with an m.2 SSD https://www.ebay.com/itm/Mini-mSATA-PCI-E-1-8-SSD-to-40pin-ZIF-CE-Cable-Adapter-Card/202710034962? and these https://www.ebay.com/itm/128GB-1-8-SSD-replacement-MK8022GAA-MK1231GAL-MK1634GAL-for-iPod-classic/184090825935? Has anyone gotten that work properly?

I notice the Toshiba 240gb drive is still available on ebay from Chinese sellers.  As a hard-drive very similar to the original drive it's likely to be far less tricky than an SSD or sd card mod.  For me it's not worth the cost, as it's more expensive than a Tarkan adaptor plus a 256gb card.

I don't use SSDs, as I find the iFlash sd card adaptor is much less problematic (always found the SSD ipod mod to be really unreliable - and seems very demanding of power...it used to get really hot when syncing), but I have the impression that for SSDs a native CE or ZIF interface one is likely to work better than one using an adaptor.

Yeah, I got that - but personally I prefer the iflash quad to an ssd - used to have the SSD but it was too prone to corrupt itself, whereas the sd card mod works perfectly well for me, as long as I use disk mode to sync (which I don't find to be a problem).

Hence the suggestion that you could try the 240gb hdd (I still have an ipod with that drive, predates the flash mods) and avoid the problems of both sd and ssd mods, if you want something that "just works".

Others seem to have found native zif ssds to be less problematic than adaptor-based ones, don't know if anyone is still around on here to give advice.

I had a ZIF SSD (Super Talent Duradrive ZT3) in my 5.5G iPod and it worked perfectly. I could use the Rockbox USB mode and never had any file corruptions. It is 5 mm thick so I had to add a little padding. This should not be necessary if you have a slim 5G iPod. I am not ure if the SSd from your second link is technically the same than this. I would avoid mSATA SSDs, they seem to drain the battery a lot and are likely to corrupt files. A 240 GB Toshiba ZIF HDD is 8 mm thick and also works perfectly. If you are satisfied with 128 GB there may be some ZIF HDDs available.

Currently re-encoding my ipod6g flac library (30830 tracks) from mp3 lame vbr v0 to v2 because my 500gb msata disk is full and there is no room to grow(!).

My music library is a mix of mp3 copied with rsync and the flac transcoded with ffmpeg as mentioned above.

I'd love for there to be a high capacity disk option that didn't have the high power (current?) draw of the msata drive or the corruption of SD cards.

I guess I'll be keeping an eye out for a cheap 1T msata disk on eBay in the near future...

Why not encode to an even lower bitrate using aac or opus? Qaac sounds fantastic even at ~128kbps (V63) imho. With Opus you might go even lower.
