Restoring iPode Classic to factory state if ipod is not detected by iTunes
« on: December 01, 2019, 12:25:41 AM »
I should first say that I am a total noob with tech stuff like this. I tried install this on the 160 ipod and it didn't work. I now wish to restore it to factory status but iTunes doesn't detect it.. Help! Is there a way to manually restore an ipod?

Put it into DFU mode, and then use iTunes to restore. See instructions here:  https://files.freemyipod.org/~user890104/bootloader-ipodclassic.html

The problem is I can't do that. I hold the buttons down and I get a black screen with words that say "Entering USB mode... Bootloader USB mode" And Windows can see it but iTunes can't see it. Which means there is no obvious way to restore it.

How long are you holding the select+menu buttons for?  Are you doing it while it's connected to the PC?

I assume you have tried rebooting the PC (and using task manager to terminate every iTunes-related process before restarting iTunes)?

Will it go into disk mode (hold down select+play)?  If it does, could do that then either have another go with installing rockbox or restoring with iTunes.

Thanks mate! I thought I was holding the buttons long enough. But per your suggestion I made sure itunes stuff was terminated, which I did not know to do. Even the though the computer formatted the ipod to exFAT iTunes found it and it got restored properly. Thank you very much. Now I'll have to decide if I want to have another go at installing rockbox.
