I'm interested in this thread too as the Sansa Clip Zip don't last long enough - I mean nothing lasts forever right? - and are no longer made. The things I LOVE about my clip are that it's small, clippable, has dedicated buttons (rather than a touchscreen - means I don't have to look at it to play/pause and skip, ESSENTIAL for running device), and has a microSD card slot. It also helps that it's at the ~$30 price point so if I run with it and it gets damaged from rain or sweat.. well at least I'm not out much. OH and 24 hr battery life is pretty freakin sweet. If anyone has anything CLOSE to that.... I'd love to hear about it.

I second this... I worry that was the golden age of portable players and we're long past it... Sure a lot of cell phones are audibly on par with the classic Sansa players but there are so many software things that can mess it up... Variable output headphone amp ic's, audio processing like dolby, lack of crossfeed, app compatibility problems, etcetera

Used iPod 5Gs come in about that price and are DAMN good if your using MP3. If you want flac i say go 6G. Make sure it has a good drive tho unless you plan to flashmod

my 2 cents:
I used to use a sansa clip+. great thing. small, battery lasted forever, tactile buttons, small, and a clip that never gave up.
Those are hard to find and now expensive, so I use a clip zip. almost as good but just not quite. color screen is useful though.
Clip zip is not getting hard to find an expensive, so here I am.
Only thing I would do to improve upon these would be slightly more processing power/speedier file access. I have 300gb of music on a 400gb card plugged in and it takes 20 hours to create the database and sometimes takes 5 seconds to decide to pause after pressing the pause button. I know I'm far out of the range of who this mp3 player was designed for and I'm using an sd card that didn't exist in 2011....
but yeah, if Sansa made a faster clip that could be rockboxable (I navigate music by files, not by album/artist/whatever, and I like to tailor the settings) and could take an sd card, I'd buy it. bluetooth could be neat too, but I'd rarely use it.
