Windows 10 computer client for Rockbox system
« on: November 26, 2019, 10:30:09 PM »
Hi, I'm a newbie and and oldie,

I'm new to Rockbox, but I've been a fan of the Clip Zip (I have three) quite a while and purchased my first mp3 player (Roxio) in 1999.  To me the iPods were too expensive, not expandable and didn't really appeal to me.  Notwithstanding that I now have been swallowed up by the iPhone family, and wish that Rockbox had an app for it.

Although I am anxious to start enjoying the unique features of Rockbox on my Clip Zips, I was wondering if there was a Windows client for Rockbox. If there is, I seem to have missed it here on the site.

For a long time I have used Windows Media Player on the PC and even as a de facto database of my music.  But it's getting long in the tooth and I was hoping to have something independent of Microsoft's whims to use and perhaps transfer my information to it.

If there is no Windows client for Rockbox, I'm interested in what program do some of you use on your PCs, both to play music, rip music and to organize your music?

Thanks for you input. I look forward to learning about all of Rockbox's many features.

I use Media Monkey, because iTunes's bugs got on my nerves, but, frankly, I find MM has plenty of bugs itself, so wouldn't especially recommend it.  Unfortunately changing between music managers is a major pain (why is there no universal, generic, format for 'smart' playlists, like there is for 'dumb' ones, allowing you to transfer them easily between different music managers?).

Foobar2000 is another possibility.

When you say 'client', what do you mean?  I just manage the music with MM (previously with iTunes) and then just robocopy the lot to the player.  Do you mean you want a Music Manager that will also do the sync process?  I believe MM can do that, though I don't use the feature myself.

Yes, something like Media Monkey was what I was thinking about when I used the word client, maybe something that would be especially compatible with Rockbox to do the syncing.

What I am really looking for is the music manager to end all music managers, one that is so popular that its format for playlists becomes the de facto standard, which every other attempt at being a music manager or mp3 player most be compatible with to have any chance of succeeding!  8) 8)

I guess we haven't arrived at that yet!

I have read about Rockbox and some on the forums, and you guys seem to be some of the most knowledgeable about these topics, so I thought that this would be the best place to ask.

So I guess I'll just have to keep muddling through!   :) :)

Thanks for info on Foobar. Despite the name, I think I'll give it a chance. ;)

Thanks for sharing those apps. I agree that iTunes is a bit complex to store the music. I kept all my music on my laptop, and one day it disappeared. So, now I'm looking for some new apps to try. Also, I switched from Mac to Windows, and I need a user-friendly app for music.

As far as I know, Rockbox doesn't have an official Windows client, but I fear not! There are some awesome programs out there that can fulfill your music needs.
One popular option among PC users is foobar2000. It's a lightweight player that offers great customization and organization features. Another one to check out is MusicBee, which has a user-friendly interface and extensive library management tools.
But have you ever heard of the cheap Windows 10 key Reddit sub? They often have some cool deals for Windows users. Perhaps there you can ask your question too. Just thought I'd mention it!
