Ipod Mini 2nd Gen with 128G
« on: September 26, 2019, 02:54:32 PM »
Had a 32G SD card in a CF adapter and had no issues with Rockbox.  I recently purchased a 128G SD card, restored with Itunes worked fine.  Itunes showing the correct memory, even added a couple songs to make sure.
Rockbox installation went fine, or so it appeared, as soon as I tried to add any music to Rockbox it freezes the Mini and I get a Panic Mount 0 error.  Should I try a different build?

Some SD-to-CF adapters seem to choke with larger SD cards. I've had this happen with a Digigear adapter I bought for an iPod Mini 2nd gen.

I know that they're pricey nowadays, but it's just best to stick with an actual CF card when you're looking to do a solid state mod for an iPod Mini. You've got more guarantee that a CF card will function properly.

Thanks for the prompt reply.  I guess my choices are to go back to the functioning Rockbox build with this CF adapter and the working 32G card or just 'settle' with using the factory firmware and be able to fully use the 128G card.  I had high hopes of getting lots of FLAC files on the 128G card, they will fill up the 32G card a bit faster than I like, and of getting a decent song sort using Rockbox.  Odd thing is that I've been using the same CF adapter for both the 32G and the 128G card.  Rockbox is just choking on the 128G but working fine with the 32G.

Perhaps it's the same sort of timing/compatibility issues that make rockbox/flash mods a bit temperamental on the ipod classics?  In that too, the size and brand of the card seemed to play a role.  I used to have a 128gb mini mod, but never bothered to rockbox it.

I just tried another SD card I had, this is a Kingston SDHC 8G card, worked both in Itunes and Rockbox.  The 32G is a SDHC card too which works fine.  The 128G is a SDXC card I wonder if the XC is causing the problem.  I read that SDHC cards are Fat32 and SDXC cards are exFAT.  I assume any card over 32G will be SDXC though.
EDIT:  I just checked the Properties of the 128G card and it is formatted Fat32.  I assume iTunes did that.

If you restored the iPod using iTunes for Windows, it'll automatically format the storage to FAT32.

Plus keep in mind that Rockbox only supports FAT32, and AFAIK no one is thinking of changing that.

*cough* exFATisopensourcenow *cough* ;)
