Toshiba Gigabeat F21 - Charging Questions

I bought an old Toshiba Gigabeat and loaded it with Rockbox. But I have some questions with the charging feature and hope some one can help me:
 - Do I need to turn on the device to charge?
 - When I turn on and charge using usb port, there is no charging icon displayed but it still charge ? Is this normal?
 - I don't have the DC charger but could I use a usbc -> 5V DC and charge it ?

I am pretty sure it can charge over USB, although if the charging icon isn't showing that does suggest it isn't charging.  Maybe try a different charger?

It's possible, I suppose, that whatever theme is being used doesn't display a charging icon.  If you go to system/Rockbox info does it say 'battery: charging'?
