Playback behavior during Fast Forward/Rewind
« on: June 15, 2019, 09:26:02 AM »
Sorry if this is a stupid question, just trying to figure out, whether to buy mp3 player with RockBox support, and need to know, if it has a simple feature. Couldn't find the answer in manual/forum/internet. So here it is. During Fast Forward/Rewind can the user actually hear the re-winded track or is it silent? E.g. I'm listening for a podcast and want to skip adds using Fast Forward. Will I be able to hear the short/abrupt samples of the track during rewind to know when to stop forwarding?

Doesn't work that way as far as I can make out, it seems it goes silent when FFing for me- I just guess the number of seconds to FF through.

You can alter the playback speed and pitch (I sometimes listen to entire podcasts at 1.5x speed, because some podcasters just talk too damn slowly and I haven't got all day!).  But changing speeds is a bit of a faff and I don't think it's possible to do it instantly in a way that would make sense for skipping ads.

Seems like it's a feature someone could add, as the basics to do it are kind-of already there.

That's a bummer. I consider such feature crucial for an MP3 player.
Maybe there is a way to "emulate" it via, lets say, temporarily increasing the playback speed? I.e. assign some "key combinaiton" (or is it only possible with custom menu shortcuts?) to play at (for example) x5 speed and another key to get it back to x1 normal speed? Totally not sure, if it is possible. just thinking out loud.

On my Sansa Clip+ holding Play/Up button increases play speed.  Not sure if this is default setting and if anything for my use I would rather be able to disable it.

Edit:  Apparently this is PITCH CONTROL and can only vary play speed between 50% and 200%.

If you turn on TIMESTRETCH then you can achieve 250% of normal playback speed at maximum.

Audible seeking would be a new feature for Rockbox.

If you're trying to skip ads then setting an appropriate SKIP LENGTH might be an acceptable workaround.
